Game UI/UX Design: A Specialised Career Within Gaming
Game UI/UX is a genuinely distinct specialization from both general app/web UI/UX and general game art — sitting at an intersection most students don't fully realize is its own dedicated career path until they encounter it directly.
What makes game UI/UX genuinely different from app or web UI/UX: designing menus, HUDs (heads-up displays), inventory systems, and interaction feedback specifically within the constraints of active gameplay — where a player's attention is divided, screen space is often deliberately minimized to avoid obscuring gameplay, and interface elements need to communicate information instantly, sometimes in the middle of fast-paced action, rather than during a calm, focused browsing session typical of app or web use.
Two distinct sub-disciplines exist within game UI/UX specifically, worth knowing about: diegetic UI (interface elements that exist within the game world itself — a health bar displayed on a character's actual armor, an ammo count shown on the physical weapon model) versus non-diegetic UI (traditional overlay menus and HUD elements outside the game world). Understanding when and why a design might use one approach over the other is a genuinely specialized design skill unique to games.
Core skills a student needs beyond general UI/UX fundamentals: understanding player psychology and attention under active engagement (very different from calm app browsing), genuine familiarity with a game engine (Unity or Unreal specifically, since game UI is typically implemented directly within the engine, not just designed as static mockups), and an understanding of accessibility considerations specific to gaming (colorblind modes, subtitle systems, control remapping) which have become significantly more prominent, expected considerations in recent years.
Where this specialization sits in a studio's team structure: game UI/UX designers typically work closely with both the broader game design team (ensuring interface decisions support actual gameplay goals) and technical/engineering teams (since implementation constraints within a specific engine genuinely shape what's realistically achievable) — a genuinely collaborative role bridging design and technical implementation more directly than most other specializations.
A practical way for a student to build a portfolio in this specific niche: rather than only showing static menu mockups, build at least one project actually implemented within a game engine — a functional inventory system, a working HUD — demonstrating not just visual design but genuine understanding of how game UI actually needs to function under real interactive conditions, which static image mockups alone can't fully prove to a recruiter familiar with this specific specialization's real demands.
